Surf City Blog!

Hi everyone,
Sorry this is so late, but once again I've procrastinated :)

For Surf City Blog answer the following questions. Remember to be positive and make no disparaging remarks about any delegate.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?

See you tomorrow!
Mrs. Patch

At the conference, I got a pretty good seat both days, so I think that helped me get called on more often. And I got to be first on the speaker’s list for the second topic, which helped a lot, because all of my ideas had never been said before. One of the challenges I faced was that I had a hard time being heard in caucus. Like, I had some ideas I still wanted to share, but everyone else was so much louder than me and taller and that made it kinda hard. My desk was also right next to a giant fan that we stole from another committee, and papers kept blowing off my desk, and that made it really annoying. I really liked my chairs, because they made it fun and brought us donuts, which I really liked. I learned that if I try really hard on my position paper, I’m more likely to get an award overall, because I’ve only had two awards, and both of those times I got research awards, so if I make sure I write a really good position paper, I’ll be more prepared.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
I felt my speeches were very informative yet interesting with my diagrams and handouts that outlined my nations policy and solutions. I also thought i was very well prepared for the conference and knew my topics front and back, seeing that i got a research award and oustanding!! :]

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
I had a hardtime during informal caucus to get my voice heard...many delegates were very power hungry. By the second day, i finally found a caucus group that let me express my policy and solutions in a more diplomatic manner.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
Overall, the chairs seemed to be very fair although this didnt benefit me too much. Also, i didnt mind the firday night conference that because it felt like the conference went by faster on friday.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I want to be more aggressive during informal cuacus...i really feel like i say this everytime i blog but its truly something i need to improve in in order to receive an award.

1. Not much went well for me at Surf City Confrence. I held my plackerd to be put on the speakers list and was put on second to last. I still tried, but I did not do great. I had my plackerd up for comments alnost every time, but only got about four chances to make a comment in both days. I made two speeches that were very iformative and i had a great hook for one of them.

2. MANY people tried to speak over eachother, and that is just MUN in general, but this was bad. They were literally yelling to get the other people in the caucus groups attention. I kept calm and tried to keep a calm voice rather than sinking to their levels. Although, I dont think this worked... =/

3. Carls Jr. was very good.

4. I learned that standing out in a committee is crucial in winning an award.

Pretty much nothing went well for me at this conference, as I was picked 5th to last on the speakers list both days and in addition, the chairs did not pick on me for about 3/4 the 2nd day. In addition, the person who got best delegate did not stand out at all and one could obviously see they values quantity over quality as that particular delegate was constantly leeching off the ideas of others and had "transparency between nations" (which by the way is immensely annoying when it pops up in committee in over 20 speeches) in every one of his speeches and comments. A good thing was that I seemed to be the only person with unique ideas, however it was unbelievably difficult to get my ideas into the resolution. China actually tried to kick me off of the formal caucus group solely based on the fact he was able to create some cheesy useless off-policy acronym. I however had the support of the majority of the caucus group and was able to override him. An interesting aspect of the committee was that my cousin from Palos Verdes Peninsula High was in my committee, which made it more interesting. One thing that I felt was okay at Surf City Conference was the burgers they had for lunch, and yet they weren't very remarkable either... During the conference the one thing I learned was that the annoying delegates always seem to get the most points, next conferences I have to make sure to find the obstacles in all their ideas and reveal them and dominate them early on before they have a chance to get noticed =).

1. I felt that I made very well-made comments. I also got moderatley good seats both days that were right next to the fan.

2. Some of the challenges that I faced included a crisis in World Bank and not getting called on. For the crisis I cacused with good people and for the not getting called on, well I couldn't do much about that unfortunetly.

3. I liked the snack bar, the french fries and how we didn't need to ride a bus to get there.

4. I learnd that I am really bad at World Bank and the importance of a good seat.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?

Well not much went well but if anything went well I'd have to say that it was the fact that there were no loud yelling people in my committee.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?

One of the challenges I had was that the chairs were way too fair and it took like 5 minutes for them to call on someone for a comment.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)

I liked that it wasn't on super bowl Sunday and the first dinner was pretty good.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?

I learned that the chairs do not give you an award if they call your country and you respond 10 seconds later saying "oh thats me, shoot."

At Surf City, I think that many things went well. First of all, I knew my topic and my solutions better than I think that I have ever known them. I was also able to play an active part in my caucus group because my solutions were unique. I think that I also made some good comments without having to refer back to my notes. There were several challenges that I faced while at Surf City. My main challenge was staying up until 9:30 on Friday night. I have not stayed up that late for a long time; I usually go to bed around 8:30. Another main challenge that I faced was having the chairs not call on me at all. The first day, I was only called on once even though I put my placard up every time. Other people got called on four, five, and six times and that made me angry because those people got a lot more points than I did. I attempted to overcome this obstacle be sending a note up to my chairs asking them to be more fair when they call on countries to make comments and guess what happened: they called on me even less. So on Saturday, I only made one comment while everyone else made eight or nine. In the end, I just let it go because there was nothing that I could do about that problem. One thing that I really liked about Surf City was that I was very high up on the speaker's list. For my first speach, I was the fifth person to go and I was the first person to give a second speach which I was very happy about. I also liked how people in the committees were more knowledgable in the topic and it seemed as if everyone in committee wanted to participate which makes it more fun. I also enjoyed meeting new people; I made friend with Austria in our group. My committee also had a crisis and we got to blow up Bolivia with 80,000 bombs which was cool. Even though I did not win an award, the important thing is that I had a fun at this conference. One main thing that I learned at this past conference is to always take your own lunch and drinks. I was so happy that I brought a bottle of water and a sandwich to the conference because Carl's Jr. is discusting and nasty. The most important skill that I learned from this conference is how to comment without refering to my notes which is a skill that will help me at other conferences.

1. What went well for you at Surf City? I thought caucusing went well at Surf City... and becoming friends with Australia and Austria.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them? Some of the challegnes that i faced were very aggressive MUNers like Thailand... Others and I left Thailands caucus group because she was too overbearing

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)Carls JJJJJ! <3

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN? To bring more food because the lunch may not always fill you up hahahaha

1. Not too much went well for me at Surf City. I was, however, suprisingly well-researched (I shocked myself), and I knew at least 10 country policies.
Also, I got a really good seat and I was called on a reasonable amount.
2. The people in my committee were all suprisingly bossy, but none of them really knew their country policies or what they were talking about. Example: one delegate who got an award (not Edison) didn't even know that the ICC was investigating Al-Bashir, and our topic is Sudan. Also, since it was really hot in the classroom, I was not able to focus on a speech for more than 25 seconds, and less if they talked fast. The thing that killed me was the comments, and even though I was trying to make them worthwhile, there was nothing good to comment on. I attempted to overcome my setbacks by talking louder than everyone else, calling a delegate out for being off-policy, wearing lighter clothes the second day, and commenting when countries's policies were different than my own.
3. I liked how small the committee was, so that you knew most of the countries.
4. I learned that it is important to comment, even though the speech wasn't so great, I learned that calling people out on their policy isn't worth it if the chair is clueless, and that a good caucus group is important if you want to be heard. I also, most importantly, learned that chairs definitely aren't perfect.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
I got a good seat and I was able to present my speeches pretty well. The delegates were also pretty cooperative and I felt pretty prepared prior the the conference. Also, I had built a friendship with a delegate from last year's conference and we were able to work well together.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
The chairs didn't seem to notice me much and didn't enjoy calling on me so I attempted to overcome this by sending them notes. Also, other delegates often interrupted during caucus so I usually let them speak and then comment on their input or I joined another group altogether.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked the Joke Awards because it was better than having to actually write another resolution and it helped to relieve a stressful weekend. We were also able to learn more about the other delegates.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned that I need to develop my solutions more and be able to present them in a way that is organized and diplomatic. Also, I learned that sitting in the front does not always mean the chairs will call on you. I also learned that it is good to make comments only when you have something important to share.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
What I feel went best for me at the conference was getting a good seat near the front and my speeches. I felt that my speeches were very informative and getting a good seat near the front made the chairs see me a lot.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?

Some challenges I faced were the amount of comments I made and being heard in caucus. Many people kept talking over me so I did not get to speak a lot. Also, whenever chairs would go by people would tend to talk more and when I would also try to speak they would not let me.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)

What I liked best about Surf City was they let everyone have a chance to speak if they wanted to. I liked that because then is was more fair to everyone. Also, my chairs were fun, which didn't make committee boring.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?

What I learned about last weekend was I can't be afraid to speak, especially when I want to make comments. Also, I need to learn to wing speeches and comments so I can just speak whenever I want to.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
At surf city, not much went well during the committee for me. I was unable to make an impression using my solutions, and it was vey difficult to make my voice heard. However, it was a good and humbling experience for me heading into the next conference.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
I have stated the challenges I faced during committee, and I tried to overcome this in many different ways. First, I motioned to start moderated caucuses, none of which passed. I also sent a note up to the chair to be picked upon more, which also didnt work.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked that I got a research award at Surf City.
4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned to never be too confident coming into a committee because it will lead to your downfall, because you are much less likely to work hard to win an award.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
Honestly, like most, not much went well. I think my chairs tried to be fair but did a pretty bad job at it. However, on a positive note, the people in my committee were diplomatic, and caucusing was easily the best part of the conference (committee wise that is). I got pretty good scores on my position papers (the ones graded by the chairs) as well.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
I can almost say that I didn't really face many challenges. Other than the fact that there will always be the overbearing people who start shouting their ideas when the chairs walk around to give points during caucus, and the fact that I got put last on the speakers list, it was all good.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked the people I met, not only from our school, but from others as well. And I liked that I got to leave early for the dance.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned that actually turning in your position papers to the chairs on time has positive effects.

1. Not much went well for me at this conference. First, i got a seat in the very back corner of the room the first day. Also, the chairs did not call on me as much as they did for many of the other delegates. Some things did go well. One of which is that I got a good group for the first resolution we wrote, and they all voted me up to speak for the resolution.
2. Some challenges I faced were my bad seat for the first day. on the second day i made sure to get there early to reserve my seat closer to the front of the room. Also, many of the delegates were very pushy and did not want to let others talk to go up for the resolution. we solved this by having everyone have to raise their hands before speaking, which sounds very immature but actually worked. also for deciding who should go up, me and another country were already for sure voted to go up but the last delegate was undecided. to see who would go up we held a vote between those most qualified. this unfortunately did not work because one country would not let go of the fact that they thought they should go up, so we ended up just letting her.
3. One thing i liked about Surf City was that Leah was in my committee which makes it more fun as well as more comfortable. also, i had a couple of people i met from other conferences who were friendly and wanted to work with me. I also, met many new friendly people.
4. I learned that if you are the one to go up to people first to ask about their policy, you will be heard and listened to more.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
At Surf City many things went well, however many more things could have been better. First, one good thing that happened was on Friday night right when committee started, I opened the speakers list so I spoke first and gave a good first impression to the chairs. This was a good thing because I felt like I knew more about this topic and I did not have to worry about someone stealing my solutions.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
I felt that at this conference, the committee sessions were SUPER long, especially Friday night and really hot because the air conditioning did not work in my room. This caused me to feel really tired and space out during a few of the speeches. I attempted to overcome this by forcing myself to make comments and pay attention to speeches.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
At Surf City, I liked the fairness of the chairs. They made sure that delegates had an equal number of comments as everyone else. I also liked seeing people from past conferences.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned that I need to be really prepared and come up with many solutions because at Surf City I felt like I was starting to get repetitive. I also want to be more aggressive in informal caucuses.

Hi everyone it is Alexandria! I think a couple things went well for me at HBHS. First I arrived early and got the best seat in committee. Next I wrote my speeches on Thursday night so I wasn’t stressed out about them on Friday. Third I wrote multiple speeches so that I could focus more on comments during committee. Some challenges I faced were getting people to let me lead the caucus groups, but I overcame this by leading a group of less aggressive delegates. Plus the chairs did not call on me much to give comments when I continuously raised my placard and I overcame this by making sure I gave lots of speeches instead. In all honesty I liked a lot of stuff about the HBHS Surf City conference. For instance I thought my chairs were pretty fair and were definitely professional. They ran the conference very proficiently and strategically. I also liked that there were juniors and/or seniors (I really don’t know) from Edison in my committee because in a way I got to learn from the experts first hand on caucusing skills, commenting, speeches and perseverance. I am really glad that I was able to attend this conference because it was definitely a learning experience. I learned how importance it is to be the leader of your caucus group and I also learned that it is imperative to go up and present your resolution every chance you get. These are essential skills that I can take with me to Los Alimitos and WCIMUN. I am pleased to have went to this conference because it was truly a terrific learning experience that will only benefit me in the future!

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
The thing that went well for me at the Surf City conference was that during the start of our second topic my caucus group was very productive and finished our resolution first so we could talk about the topic without feeling rushed.
2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
Some challenges for me were walking into a caucus group and I could not get in because everyone was squished together and would not spread out, so to solve the problem I would just walk to another caucus group.
3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
The thing I liked about the Surf City conference was being in a room where there was a lot of posters and a window view to the front of the school.
4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
One thing I learned from this conference is that the more in depth you are when wrighting operatives for the resolution, the more the caucus group will vote for you to go up and talk.

2. I didnt really have any challenges except maybe changing ideas on how to solve a problem to better suit the resolution.

3. I loved the fact that i got to leave early for the dance. WHOOT!!!! and the food was pretty good, or i was really hungry.

4. I learned that sometimes you just have to push your ideas through in a caucus group otherwise your ideas may never be heard.

1. What went well for me at Surf City was the amount of times I was called. Every time I raised my placard, I was called almost instantly. Also, it went well that Matt got his award with my emotional support.

2. Some challenges I faced were these obnoxious delegates who threw facts out that did not relate in any way. I overcame this by joining a different caucus group.

3. What I liked about Surf City was I had much fun in my committee. There were many entertaining things in the committee.

4. What I learned at Surf City was from other delegate's mistakes and it was to know what my country is and to follow the format of the position papers.

1.I felt my speeches went especially well at Surf City. In my first speech I used an interesting hook that grabbed the attention of both the committee and my chairs. In my second speech I did not use a hook, but instead presented very viable solutions. I also felt my comments went well because I was able to point out flaws in other people’s solutions.
2.One challenge I faced was trying to incorporate my solutions into the resolutions. I came up with many solutions before the conference, but during caucusing it was difficult to use them because so many people were trying to talk. I was not able to become the leader of my caucus group because of this. Another challenge I faced was how I was on the bottom of the speaker’s list for the second topic. When it finally became my turn to speak, we were in a moderated caucus down the speaker’s list and I only had one minute to speak.
3.I liked how there were many juniors and seniors in our committees. This gave me a chance to observe some very good speakers.
4.I learned that hook speeches are very beneficial because it gives you a lasting impact on the chair and the committee. For Los Al and WCIMUN, I will present many solutions in my speeches while keeping the committee’s attention. I also learned that it is helpful to learn about other resolutions before formal caucus so I can prepare better questions. At Los Al and WCIMUN, I will try to get our resolution done first so I can ask others about theirs while they are still working on it.

1. Although Surf City wasn't my favorite conference, a few things went alright. I think i was able to get a good seat both days, and the chairs called on me a lot. I got to speak multiple times during moderated caucus and i made a lot of comments.
2. Well..the first day didn't go very well because I misread my policy statement and accidentally wet totally against my policy, and i think the chairs noticed because a lot of people had charts with everyone's policies on them. The next day i made sure I was positive what my country's position was. The first topic I was also with a horrible caucus group who wouldn't let me do anything and were undiplomatic and mean.
3. Hmmm...well i liked the topics that i had (SC reform and the Situation in Iran) because they were really interesting and every country had distinct policies and solutions. I also liked the crisis that came up in my committee becuase it made it more interesting.
4. I learned that Is should look into other country's policies as well as my own so that i have an idea on which countries i should caucus with. I also learned that it is important to speak up and get my opinion out during informal caucus and to have solid solutions prepared.

Unknown said...

In my opinion I felt that my speeches had been better than a lot of my other speeches in the past. I feel that I have improved a lot in the way I present my thoughts and ideas. Some of the challenges I had faced were that during caucus I did not really get that much of an opportunity to get my point across the floor, but once i had seen this i had been a lot more aggressive to say what i needed to say. The thing that I had most enjoyed about the conference had been the food. i thought that it was excellent and I enjoyed it very much. The most valuable thing that I will take to my next conference is the fact to work a lot harder on my speeches and present them a lot better than what i had done. I will learn from my mistakes and improve my speaking skills.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
I think what went well for me was that I had fun, since Katie was in my committee and there were some interesting/funny people in my committee.
2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
My challenge was definitely having to sit in the back on the first day. I was also slightly frustrated because even though I had my placard up for everything, I didn't get to speak a lot.
3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked...ummmmmmm...I liked my committee because WHO is my favorite.
4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned to make a basic outline of your solutions to bring with you to the conference so you can have a reference while in caucus.

At the HBHS conference, I felt that I did not do as well as I could. Some major aspects that I can improve on are the amount of comments that I make and asserting myself in a caucus group. Some aspects that I propelled at were delivery of speech and writing of solutions. Although I was towards the end both times on the speakers list, I was still able to present relevant speeches. Some people that I felt did well in my committee include Israel and France. Both of these countries made speeches that flowed well and they also made many comments. One major challenge that I had was staying involved in the ongoing discussions. I feel that this problem aroused because of the similarities of policies and solutions between all delegates. I attempted to overcome this by presenting more original solutions. I enjoyed Surf City because it was on Fri/Sat instead of Sat/Sun. From this conference I have learned that I should pick topics with more controversy if I want to be more involved. Topics that are more controversial seem to keep me awake and ready. I will do better at Los AL and WICIMUN because I will make more speeches and comments that are relevant.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
My speeches went well. It was informative and smooth.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
Some challenges would be trying to get your ideas across the caucus group and being able to debate agreesively but in an assertive way. I tried to go into another caucus group which I could easily express my ideas.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I like the lunch they had.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
It was a good experience to be able to see the juniors especially from Cerritos debating.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?

Surf City was alright for me. I was able to speak a pretty good number of times, and i raised my placard very often to make comments. Also, for the second topic, I was able to come up with a few very unique solutions that nobody else had. I'm really happy that I won a commendation. :) I took pretty good notes and made well-constructed questions and comments, for the most part.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?

The delegates from other schools were really loud and some of them were not very easygoing with giving people a chance to speak. Also, I was very frustrated that my caucus group for the second topic actually recruited me for my unique solutions, and then they didn't even let me go up to speak for our resolution group. It also seemed like the chairs didn't really call on the area of the room in which I was seated very much.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)

I liked that it was so close to my house, because I live maybe 7 minutes away at most, so the commute was easy. I also liked winning a commendation.
4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?

I learned that thinking of a unique solution will draw a lot of attention to me, but that if I want to secure my position, I have to write my operatives really, really quickly so I get them in on time.

1. What went well for you at Surf City? The thing that went best for me in the committees was definitely that I had a country that actually had a say in the UN or rather World Bank. I had a relatively high amount of money and people definitely wanted my support.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them? The main challenge I faced was getting the chairs attention. This was probably due to my poor luck in getting a good seat. Overall it didn't seem to be too big of an issue. The other major challenge was going against some very very experienced World Bank delegates.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)The Best part of Surf City conference was definitely listening to Nathans epic speech at the end of committee. It was by far the most interesting and creative speech while maintaining relevance.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN? The biggest thing I learned that I will be using in Los Al is to use Nathans creativity and make some killer speeches. Also I have been reminded of the importance of getting good seats.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
I did pretty well during caucus and felt like the chairs got me down for many points while they were walking around. I also contributed to my caucus group a lot of my ideas. I was called on many times for questions, but not so much comments.
2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
My caucus group on the first day was very rude and interrupted each other. They didnt really listen to other people except the bigger nations. However, on the second day, I found a better group who worked more diplomatically. I could share my ideas and therefore took a strong part of the resolution.
3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked the chairs because they were friendly and the food was decent.
4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I really need to do something miraculous and attractive so the chairs will call on me not near the end! Like seriously, I got called last! I also need to be more aggressive during caucus even though people were extremely rude and i by no means want to be like them. I also need to comment more. In the beginning, I was kinda bummed it was Friday and i wasnt really into it, but later on i commented more.

1. The things that went well for me were my extremely stylish and handsome outfits, getting a research award, and giving the most epic speech in the history of MUN.
2. The biggest challenge I faced was not knowing what to give speeches on because it was my first world bank. And to overcome this, I just listened to what other people were saying and tried to present my ideas in a similar fashion.
3. I liked that I got to leave early and that they sold Starbucks at the snack bar.
4. I learned that being creative and original is the best way to make an MUN conference entertaining.

1. At Surf City, I was well versed in my topic so that enabled me to contribute a lot of ideas during caucus. This meant that I went up during formal caucus and got to put a lot of new ideas out there.
2. For both topics I was close to last on the speakers list. to make the best of this solution, I wrote my speeches on the resolutions we formed so my speeches were still relevant. Also on the second day, the chair would not call on me to comment for the longest time, even though i raised my placard for every speech. I used this time to work on operatives for the resolution so I was still working for points.
3. My committee was super fun, and had a lot of nice delegates in it.
4. I learned that memorized speeches look really impressive, and also not to be afraid to put creative ideas out there.

1. I though caucusing went well in my committee because I helped make two resolutions that would have been better than actual UN resolutions.
2. Some challenges were that a delegate from Edison took our comment and question, before we can ask it. We couldn't really overcome them, but we tried to quickly make up other questions.
3. I liked that there were other Edison delegates in my committee.
4. I learned that in crises, I have to think really fast and use all the information i know to solve the situations.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
At Surf City, basically the only good thing was I commented a lot. However, after a while the chair stopped calling on me so that didn't work out too well. I also got to go up for formal caucaus both times which was nice.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
The biggest challenge was talking in caucaus. I really had to project my ideas loudly without being disrespectful. I think that I effectively got my ideas over and let people talk too and I was happy about that.
3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
Having a crisis... actually I didn't really like it at first, but it made the last hour go by a LOT faster which is always nice :)

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
Be aggressive. Seriously, I think being assertive in the beginning of conference is the way to get through the entire conference. Also, being prepared really gives you an edge, and knowing other people's policy gives you an upperhand on committee. I definetly researching more for Los Al & WIKIMUN!

I think that the chairs tried really hard to make it fair and they always called on me when I raised my placard.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
Some of the challenges was that some things that people brought up in conference I had never thought about before. I tried to listen more in hope to understand it better.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
The chairs were pretty fair.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I heard the chairs talking that when they are standing next to your caucus group, they aren't listening to your group; instead they are listening to the other group and taking down delegates who are speaking in the other one.

At Surf City I thought that I was very good at asking qustions about resolutions. During Formal Cacus I thought that I brought up some valid flaws in resolutions which later led to the resolutions not passing. That was problably one of the best things I did at Surf City.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
Some challenges at Surf City included not getting called on, and being active in cacus groups. In our committee we had many people that were very rude during cacus and would inturupt and yell during cacus. This was hard to deal with during committee, becaus eit was so hard to talk over and get your points across. However, I did end up presenting one of my resolutions.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked the fact that we didn't have committee on super bowl sunday!

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned at Surf City that sometimes in order to be heard of in committee you need to be loud and blunt with people.

Well, first off, I was able to be one of the leads in one caucus, which meant I was able to go up for formal caucus. I won an award, which was cool. Also, on the first day, the chair baked brownies. :)

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
Well, the people in my first caucus group were really, how do I put this nicely...stubborn(?). They wouldn't listen to me and were constantly interrupting me. In an effort to get my ideas out there I sent 3 operatives and one preamble to the person in charge of the res. Of course, they didn't put them in there. How rude. Also, one chick started talking whilst I was still trying to explain thing so I gave her an evil look and spoke louder.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked caucusing in a smaller, more laid back group. Even though our res didn't pass (only one out of the four did) I was still able to get my ideas out there which was better than being a nobody in a big group.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned that it is very important to be diplomatic. Of course I already knew this but after people were so rude to me at HBHS I realized how important it was. Also, I think I will take a tip from Bangladesh, who I thought did the best, which is to go around contacting those who he believed weren't doing much in their caucus group and lobbied his ideas. He was very diplomatic so that was coolio.

For some reason the seat I sat in was good for getting called on even though it was in the back area. Also, I had an idea that no one else had in my committee so other countries were coming to me to form a working paper group. When one group got over bossy, other countries pulled me and some other countries aside so we could actually talk which was good.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
Our committee was full of very smart delegates who seemed to have a topic similar to this before so it was difficult to get up to speed. Heather and I discussed ideas with one another during caucus and worked with eachother to make operatives. This helped us play active roles in writing position papers.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
I liked my committee and the delegates in it. No one was too agressive only three delegates were delegates who talked over one another, but they split off so there was not any conflict. Also, Heather and Kayli were in my committee, making it not boring for one second. =)

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned to speak up!
During caucus you get points for talking even if its just you and another delegation. You dont have to join the caucus group with screamers who want control. Rather than that, join a smaller group and talk to them so you can get your points. haha =)

At this conference, I was able to sit in the front both days so the chairs actually noticed me. I also brought good solutions to my resolution group so that helped me get points. The challenges that I faced were that my chairs would not pick on me during the entire span of committee. So, I just kept raising my placard and writing comments, ready to speak whenever they felt like calling on me. I liked how the committee wasn't too long and most of the people in our committee were really nice. I learned at this conference that I really need to stand out and give netter comments and speeches. At Los Al and WCIMUN I plan on memorizing my speeches and trying to give comments without writing them down!

1. What went well for you at Surf City?
At surf city I was able to give all of my speeches with little to no notes. I was also able to make a decent number of comments. I also was fortunate in having a very good resolution group both times.
2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?
One challenge that I faced was on the second day when the chairs rarely called on me. This was very frustrating but I continued to raise my placard when I had a comment, and eventually they called on me. Additionally, I did not feel as prepared as I usually do at conferences, mainly because I did not have as much time to prepare due to finals. Also, although I had a very good resolution group, they were very controlling and assertive when it came to going up for formal caucus, so unfortunately I was unable to go up.
3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
One thing that I liked about surf city was that it was not as long as some of the other two day conferences I have been to like UCLA
4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
Last weekend I learned that it is very important to always be prepared because that is ultimately what is important to succeed at an MUN conference.

1. What went well for you at Surf City?

At the Surf City conference, I was able to get a lot of speaking time. During formal caucus, I talked a number of times as well as comments. I also was able to give two speeches.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?

During informal caucus, I had a difficult time taking control of my caucus group. In the end, I stopped holding back and was able to present our group resolution.

3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)
At Surf City, I liked that I was able to speak so often. The chairs were very fair and tried to call on everyone equally.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?
I learned that in order to win an award you must dominate your committee both in speaking and caucusing. I am excited to go to Los Al and WCIMUN because I feel that after the Surf City conference, I will win an award.

At the conference I had a pretty good seat both days, the same seat actually. I got called on almost every time that I raised my placard. The chairs were very cool and they were also professional about the conference. Also, they were very good about making sure that everyone got a fair amount of time speaking. The second day, the room was not extremely hot so that was more comfortable. My only challenge was trying to speak up in caucus groups because I really hate cutting other people off in order to voice my opinion. I am a really loud person but I always feel really insecure about what I have to say in the group. I really didnt like anything at the Huntington beach conference because it almost felt unprepared and haphazardous. They did not have enough desks in my room to accomadate everyone. Also, on the first day, it was really ultra hot and stuffy which sucked the life out of me. I guess one thing I did like about the conference was that it did end early and luch was not the worst that we ever had. I need to speak up more often in informal causus and I alwo need to start speaking without anything in my hads and just kind of wing my speeches/comments. I feel that I would maybe get some bonus points if I were to do that. Or at least I would more professional and look/sound like I really know what I am talking about. I am sorry that this blog is late and I have no excuse for why it is late other than the fact that I completely forgot about it even though I wrote it in my binder reminder.

I beleive that my specches and comments were the best thing that I had performed at suf city. They were informative and had many solutions.

2. What were some challenges you faced and how did you attempt to overcome them?

Challenges that I had faced was getting my solutions out during cacusing. Everyone was very opionated and yelled a lot to get there ideas out during caucusing. I overcame this by sending note to other delegated during committe that I wanted to work with and best suited my country, this way I was able to talk more about similiar policys to these countrys.
3. What did you like about Surf City (at least one thing!)

I like the lunch at Surf City.

4. What did you learn last weekend that you can take with you to Los Al or WCIMUN?

I learned that sending notes and haveing great speeches and comments could help out a lot during committe. Exspecially when you want to get you solutions out without other delegates yelling over you.
